First Inspirations and Ideas

We wanted to do a cute game where the protagonist would be a cat in a cozy house, and that defined pretty much everything about our art style. Being a cozy games where our target audience were Women we knew we had to do a cute cartoony art style. We did research games we wanted to take inspiration for the art:

  • Night in the woods
  • Spiritfarer
  • Stardew Valley
  • Unpacking
  • Lapin
  • Animal Crossing

There are some pixel art games in there that we take inspiration not specifically in the art style but in how the world works there, like Stardew Valley is top-down just like our game and we needed references to understand how could we position the objects, player, and furniture.

Where we started

The first thing we needed to gather was references and construct a moodboard, Matching the vibes of the three mood boards was too an important point so the style between every division wouldn't differ much.

We all decided we were searching for a rustic-like style, warmer tones, plants, and also that would remind us of traditional Portuguese houses and decorations. José, our developer, was free to search for what he thought was better since he was making a moodboard for the garden, something not much related to the interior

After that was finished we all agreed and started to do thumbnails, once again each one did one division according to the moodboards. This was a fun part, we could study all the possible variations of the furniture like we were decorating our own house! In the end, everyone was able to do around 13 thumbs.

To Sum Up

We could decide on the art style pretty quickly, with our target audience already defined and our inspirations picked as well we could all work as a team and in harmony. The next step is to finish the world mockup and start with the character and Ui!
