Road To VR has spotted an interesting deal for the previous generation Samsung Gear VR mobile headset. Over on Amazon, the older Gear VR can be bought for US$59.99 – which is $40 down from its initial retail price (and price of its newer model) of US$99.99.
The new Gear VR (in darker navy blue) was announced a month ago. Its technical specifications are quite close to that of the previous Gear VR (in white). It features a slightly increased field of view, more comfortable straps, as well as support for Samsung’s latest generation of phones, including the Galaxy Note 7. Another addition comes in the form of a second button on the headset itself. Where the previous Gear VR only featured a single Home button, the near Gear VR now sports a Home and a Back button.
Despite these changes to the hardware, there’s currently no indication that any Gear VR content will be unavailable to users of the first generation mobile HMD. Since it’s still using largely the same suite of Android phones, there aren’t any clear restrictions on content for one particular headset generation over the other. So, though you may be missing out on some comfortable new features, it’s unlikely you’ll be missing out on any specific mobile VR content in general if you opt to buy the cheaper Gear VR over its newer, navy model.
