Though it was announced late last year that Minecraft would be receiving official support for the Oculus Rift, today was the first time we got to see that in action. In a video Microsoft released covering the Xbox Spring Showcase, Xbox Live's Major Nelson, Larry Hryb, went hands-on with Minecraft's new VR mode.

The VR mode is exclusive to Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition, which - being sold through the Windows Store - makes it exclusive to the Windows 10 operating system.

The Verge went hands-on with the Oculus Rift mode, and reported that, though the world felt "real", moving around in it presented some issues which broke the experience:

"My head and joystick were in constant battle for control of my view. At times, I had to use the Xbox One controller to reorient the screen because the alternative was moving my whole body in dramatic fashion just to, say, round a sharp corner or turn to look behind me. It's odd and discombobulating watching your view jitter left and right when you use the thumbstick while your head stays stationary. It's a necessary though to have a wide-open game world you can't explore by physically walking around a room."

YouTuber OMGchad also went hands-on with Minecraft's VR mode, and recorded new gameplay footage along with interviews with developer Mojang:

According to Mojang, Minecraft's VR mode has no official release date, beyond "after the Oculus", so expect it at the earliest during Q2 this year.
