The state of New Mexico has become this rich scenario. It is in sub-arctic climate and starts 1975. Made by Bryan Bingham from New Mexico.
Scenario created by Bryan Bingham. Mirrored here for archival purposes. I have included a .scn file for this scenario so it can be opened in OpenTTD.

The blank scenarios are useful starting points for your ownscenarios. Be careful to not get rid of water in the middle until you are done because it is impossible to get water to appear without a source already being present.
NM 9.6 is about as geographically faithful to my beautiful home state as TTDLX makes it possible to be. Even the resources are basically accurate, although I have tweaked them considerablyin the interests of good game play. El Paso, Texas is included because it has a real impact on the economy in NM, but I amglad it isn't really a part of my state. I believe every townhas at least one resource to be exploited.
Yes, there is a real town called Bingham; it's tinier than even I made it. My family has no connection to it. The house marked withmy name is almost exactly where I live right now. I grewup near the football stadium in Albuquerque, across the street froma football stadium no less. The area south of Albuquerque iswhere the airport is, but you'll have to blow up a few houses toget one to fit there in TTDLX.
The sub-arctic climate is nearly perfect for New Mexico except that there are too many trees, and I wish I could have used the desert terrain from the jungle climatein addition to the rocky terrain.
The map is so huge that if you play with more than 3 or 4 competitors it is basically impossible to prevent one or morefrom monopolizing large areas. The AI is extremely weak when itcomes to upgrading from rail to monorail however, so you canusually buy them out when their trains' reliability degrades.
Ships are useless in New Mexico and airports are difficult to place but can be extremely lucrative later in the game. Don't getsuckered into placing them early because populations tendto drop for the first twenty years or so until you providesome transportation services between larger cities. The interstates highways (I-25, I-40, and I-10) are completely builtmaking good bus routes immediately available. I don't likeroads very much, but buses can be helpful in the beginning.
For a challenge, try to capitalize early on the coal in the NEquadrant. Or try to get the sole printing plant in Albuquerquefed with paper from Santa Fe or Truth or Consequences before itdisappears.
If you know a way to make money from gold mines let me know;I removed several because they just don't make money, although New Mexico is loaded with them. Come to think of it,most of them are abandoned also.
For fairly easy success start feeding the food processing centersin Roswell, Las Cruces, Rio Rancho, and Gallup. Oil is good but youmight have to wait to build your own refinery as ones in El Paso and Grantshave a tendency to disappear.
The saved game shows the possibilities of the latter strategies.
I owe a debt to Mike Metcalf's Transport Tycoon Deluxe StrategyWWW site. His tips about station construction and mandatory servicing make highly efficient rail networks possible.Check the site out: Netzone.com
All of us who like TTDLX of course owe Chris Sawyer a great deal.I hope he is doing well and is thinking about furthering this wonderful product.
