I'm posting this article mainly just to announce the project but I've also included some technical information below that you may find interesting. I just finished uploading most of my profile content, though I still have some things to add. Please visit my website for more information and screenshots (www.briangardiner.com). This game features some pretty detailed animation that I've been looking forward to showing off so be sure to watch the trailer.
AFE is a shoot-em-up with a bit of parkour action thrown in. As the characters move there are gates in certain parts of their animation where the transition to a different animation can be made. It may feel awkward at first but this allows for some very fluid character movement. If you've ever played games like Flashback or Abe's Odyssey then you may already have a feel for it. Every animation in the game plays at 24 frames per second. No exceptions.
It also features the ability to shoot left and/or right independently. This means you can shoot the enemies behind you as you walk forward, or better yet you can shoot the enemies in front and behind simultaneously.

It is my hope that this game stands out as a high quality Game maker release. There are so many Sonic and Mario clones out there from the GM community, and I believe the people that make them are actually much more capable then they seem! Your comments and suggestions are welcome. Enjoy the beta release of ÆON FLUX!
this game looks good :)
(buried)
Eh, I don't see how a game based off of a terrible movie could be any good... =/
This looks like it's based on the - rather good - animated TV series, which is the origin of Aeon Flux I believe, and which the "terrible movie" was also based on :)
There was a cartoon? O_o I was wondering why of all things the game was cartoon styled, guess I know now. =P
Yes the animated series was quite interesting.
Movie was crap, but the cartoon is really great. And ffs, it's no anime!
watched the episodes few months ago. it's really interesting and creapy, but this game doen't really feels like it. only jumping and shooting. u guys need more textures and gameplay elements.
This remind me of Venture Brothers. Just because of the art style.
aye its an old animated tv series :) but ya looks cool.. i will give this a download!
looks cool, I liked the series a lot :)
tracking
Flashback you say? Hmmm, I may be inclined to check this out.
the walking looks totaly unmotivated maybe a little more smother more like "uhh danger" like the series and the turning around also looks awfull
and how they hold there weopons they all looks like morons ore idiots from old scifi movies (or old games)
thats all to complain the rest is ******* awesome good work
ugh, that stick they have instead of spine must be pretty inconvenient. apart from that, animations are pretty.
After reading the comments I suddenly feel very, very old.
do you have to pick up bits and pieces of clothing as upgrades or....?
I can't start the game because of some error.
PM me what it says and I'll try to help. You're not running it from inside the zip are you?
Hmm from the trailer it looks pretty good
I will try it
Very cool. Congrats on the release!
Love the art style- especially the sunset scenes.
Thanks for the support everyone! I'll try to release a new video soon that shows off some of cool stunts she can perform.
She's not wearing enough clothing... kinda creepy.
If you haven't seen Aeon Flux, its worth checking out. Very different and metaphorical anime that is unique in design and concept. Its so bizarre and deep while at the same time fast paced and fragmented. This game looks great and the platforming reminds me of Dark Castle. Finally, at the end of the trailer you should have had that last lone soldier shoot and kill Aeon since it was quite common for her to die in the shorts on liquid television.
Tracking and downloading, thanks!
I'm a huge fan of bot Aeon Flux and Flashback, this is a completely unexpected dream come true
Wow, I remember watching this as a kid and being very confused as to why she never stayed dead. :p Gonna try this out.
Wow that part with the broken elevator is a serious pain in the ***. I mean, I got all the way to the next area past the working elevators and it still sends me back next to the broken one when I die. Is it supposed to do that? It seems like the restart point would have updated by then. I just gave up when I realized I'd have to redo so much of the level.
Well I finally managed to get through it after much frustration. I think I just needed some time to calm down and to play more deliberately. I noticed there's a screenshot of Aeon wearing a mook suit, but I seem to have missed that in my playthrough. Is it actually possible to get one of those?
There are some things in the trailer and the screenshots that didn't make it into the beta release. If I can complete the game you'll be able to wear the enemy uniform in some levels. I don't have a proper save/load system just yet so I put in that checkpoint system at the last minute. If there is a second beta release I'll probably add a couple of checkpoints so people don't have to backtrack as much.
What's with all the "if"s? You gotta keep working on this! It's already pretty good and could be great! It just needs work. It could definitely do with some more animations, like being able to draw your guns while moving or crouched. Would also be cool if the there were some idle animations for Aeon and the enemies. Some more melee combat abilities would be cool too. Also, the male soldiers having distinctly female hips is quite... disconcerting...
There's a bug I've noticed where the sound will get progressively more corrupted every time you die and respawn until it starts crackling and being unrecognizable. otherwise this release seems pretty much bug free. One issue I had was that the enemies are invulnerable in a bit too many of their animations. About the only times they can be killed is when they're standing completely still, crouched and still, in the middle of their walking animation, or in the middle of their running animation. If they're speeding up or slowing down from a run, climbing, jumping, drawing a weapon, dropping from a higher level, or anything else I missed, they seems to be invincible.
Sorry for all the criticism... It's just difficult to get specific about the game's good points. The animation really flows nicely, and the level design is cool. Thank you so much for leaving out leaps of faith. Oh yeah, one last question. What exactly does wearing the enemy uniform do and how does it work? Is it just a handy power up to keep enemies from shooting at you or is there more to it? Like using it to get into locked area?
Great game. The only thing I miss is a save/load system, otherwise it works perfectly.
This looks amazing!
I always forget how powerful Game Maker is...
Great job!
