We at Frictional Games are happy to announce that Amnesia: The Dark Descent has gone gold. We are extremely pleased with our creation and cannot wait to unleash our bundle of madness on the 8th of September. We feel that we have taken a giant leap forward compared to our previous games, the Penumbra series.
The Dark Descent is a first person horror game with a focus on immersion. It is a game where atmosphere and story comes first. We hope that the game will be a breeze of fresh air, in a genre otherwise populated by "one-man-army action hero" sagas. In Amnesia you are almost completely defenseless, something we believe not only makes the game a lot scarier, but also gives a vastly different experience.
On the 8th of September, an interactive nightmare where reality is a fragile concept awaits. Do you have what it takes to survive?

This looks amazing, the Penumbra games were quite scary xD
i cannot wait for this game! thank you :-) will definatley purchase on steam :-)
Linux support too! Can't wait to get my hands on this :)
Awesome guys, keep it up, Penumbra is one of the very few games to scare me, and not just go "SHOCK VALUE!" like F.E.A.R or so.
Watched the trailer and i really gotta say it looks massive !!
The atmosphere seems even scarier than Metro2033, which used a similiar concept of fear. I think i'm going to buy myself a copy of this.
Will there really be no fighting/any weapons ?
i didnt see anyone scary tho ...
AWESOME!
I was getting starved for something like this. :D
I'll definitely pick this up if it hits steam. Although, I must say, I'm not a huge fan of the Penumbra series because I felt the puzzles were either illogical or just totally impractical for any level-headed human being to think of.
Regarding the lack of combat: While I do think less combat does make some situations more scary, I think a total lack of any type of combat for most of the game seems illogical to me. If I were being chased by monsters, the #1 thing on my mind would be to find a weapon and beat the $h!t out of anything that gets near me.
MatthewD...
Somehow, I seriously doubt that.
Imagine getting chased by a T-rex or a large scary-looking monster.
Your fight or flight center is activated, and unless you're suicidal you'll be running trying to find a place to hide.
If hiding fails then you would perhaps try to find a way to fight back, or just get killed while trying to defend yourself with your hands.
Most of this would of course be instinctual.
That's just how self-perservantion works.
Yeah but none of the monsters in Penumbra were large or T-rex sized. They were basically zombies.
I have to agree with that. But still, my first reactions when seeing such a creature would be to run and then think at some means to fight back.
Though, that won't stop me from throwing objects at the enemy wile running away.
So perhaps there should be a turning point in the game where the character mentally decides to deal with the situation and fight back. This is actually very common in horror movies (i.e. the main character will first flee from the creature, then later in the story, they fight back).
Still, the main idea that makes Penumbra scary is the fact that you can only run and hide. I have had enough of these generic survival horrors where you run around with a shotgun, shooting that everything that moves and moans "Braaaaains.".
The poor Daniel of Amnesia is confused and doesn't know anything about anything, and let us also assume he's a wimp like Philip from Penumbra. He is not ready to fight back.
I'm sure there will be some means of fighting back at some certain parts. For example, setting up a trap for the creature. If you remember in Penumbra: Black Plague, at the part where Clarence makes you halucinate to think the doctor is a turngait creature. You make it follow you and when in the right position you drop the metal box, killing it.
You could also use the Pickaxe in Overture to attack stuff...
