Well, virtual servers are not great at running physics for large worlds. I'm going to have to find some server hardware to get this running properly. Luckily, I started an internship at a company that does cloud computing so I should be able to get old machines from them.
Using unity, the asset store is very helpful in getting game ready assets for a reasonable price but getting everything to match is difficult. For the last two weeks, I've been hard at work making a building constructor much like the Sims. You can try it out over here. Move around with right click and dragging the mouse, click and drag on the grid for floors, drag out walls. Adding doors and textures is done in the respective tabs. My first attempt automatically creating roofs was really slow so I'm working on manual placement. With the builder, I can make multistory buildings with a more matching style. I haven't made more wall meshes, but it should allow rougher walls and different styles as long as the edges match with their other side. This is heavily inspired by the Sims but I plan on using it as an internal building tool for this game. Maybe I'll make a a game that lets the player use it someday.
Planned for the Building constructor:
Easy placement of stairs
Hiding the area between walls and between floors and ceilings to prevent people from seeing the backs of the meshes.
Automatic Roofing(I hope)
Variety of wall meshs, doors and windows for different building styles
Diagonal walls for less blocky buildings.
I'm still working on getting movement smoother but buildings have taken most of my attention. Unless something breaks more, I might be able to get the server up again in a few weeks.
