One of the big ticket item's on Gamemaker's roadmap for 2023, was better mod support. Modding has been one of most popular requests from users, and Gamemaker.io">while GameMaker offers limited support for modding, expanding the capabilities over the course of this year is a focus.

Beginning this month, GameMaker now features an official mod.io extension, which is available from Github. The mod.io API works on all platforms using the REST API. For developers, HTML documentation is included with the extension and inside the demo project (datafiles) and a fully converted version to the Github Wiki format.

Mod.io: The Next Generation Are Growing Up As Creators

To mark the release, GameMaker has conducted an interview with me, Scott, to speak about my 20 year journey with mods, from founding ModDB to mod.io. A sample is shared below.

Is there a type of mod for your favourite game you’d like to see?
I want to see mods interwoven into the gameplay experience, and for games to experiment and try interesting things. Imagine in Super Mario if every time you went down a green pipe, it teleported you into a player created level. Or when your game ends, player created levels keep running.

We can't wait to see modding feature more promiently in GameMaker games, given the engine continues to be used to make critically acclaimed titles like Undertale, Hotline Miami, Hyper Light Drifter, Nuclear Throne, and Chicory: A Colorful Tale. For more information about the partnership, head to the mod.io blog or contact mod.io to discuss mod support in your game.

Sweet! I remember Battleships Forever had modding abilities and it was borderline miraculous. Had all custom tools for it too!

Made a ton of ships and sprites for that game.
