Hello friends!
In this Devlog we will be talking a little bit about two different NPCs in our game - The twins!
Since we are currently working on this project for school and need keep the scope as small as possible, we had to come up with different solutions to cut some corners while keeping the game interesting.
We have planned to have 5 different Characters in our game (which is a lot for 5 months of development), so we decided that two of our characters would be really similar (same model, same animations) and only be different in clothes and/or different small details. By doing that, our artist is able to kill two birds with one stone, if that makes sense!
Since our narrative cannot be affected by this, we decided that these two NPCs would be constantly interacting with each other, playing with the fact that they are twins and sometimes even making the player believe they're only one character that pretends to be two different people!
The characters that we chose for this are the Boat repair shop tech and the Shady black market seller, both being cats, like the shady black market seller was previously.
The Character Descriptions!
Here's the entry for these two characters in our narrative design document:
Boat Repair Shop Tech:
A completely madman of a character. He is the typical mad scientist, with messy hair and too many things exploding around him for his own good due to the thing he is currently tinkering with. He will often ask for extra deliveries on the next day so that he can work on other personal projects.
Shady black market seller :
A really sketchy guy, he definitely looks like he sells things at the black market, but it's all good since he offers you the best deals when it comes to amulets he acquired “Legally” that boost the main character. He somehow is also friends with all the citizens in this floating island, so he may offer you exclusive deals once you reach a certain level of friendship with different characters.
As you can see, they are both really unique characters, and we think that they would pair up nicely with each other.
The Houses!
Boat Repair Shop Tech:
We wanted their house to reflect the fact that they are different and love to invent new things, while also combining the fact that he repairs boats for a living!
We currently are leaning towards the last two designs, but be sure to let us know which one you liked the most in the comments!
Shady black market seller:
The design for this house is already set, since we are currently working on this house and its interior for another curricular unit of our course (3D Production). For this assignment, we have to create an interior and render all the lights in it. Because we wanted to save as much work as possible, we decided to create an interior for our game. Because of the need for lighting, we have already decided the design of the house and its windows!
With this concept in mind, we started modeling the interior of this house, focusing on the Black Market vibe...
We wanted to try and incorporate many different aspects of our game and keep this interior really unorganized and cluttered, since this is what we imagine a black market on our game might look like!
We still haven't completely finished two corners of our store, but the main idea is to continue playing with the camera to be able to access different tables at the store. If the player wants to purchase certain items, they will need to rotate the camera in order to face that corner of the room and access the store.
