Well I wouldn't assume that the North Koreans are that cheap with their equipment.
Although they're badly managed, the country spends almost all of its money on military preparedness. They have built some very interesting weapons systems, including a PKM that can be both belt and magazine fed.
In the western world we tend to underestimate our enemy's will and capability to fight. You'd be surprised what a couple of people hiding in Korea's mountains with rpgs and aks could do- especially with upgraded versions of these weapons...
I meant that steel cases, while mostly as reliable as brass, are a lot less expensive. The AK is cheap but it still has some features that have so far been unmatched. Simple, cheap, and efficient: I find these qualities more attractive than paying for the latest technology that are meant to replace the human's senses and instincts rather than enhance them.
I agree- technology is a huge edge against the enemy, but we should also retain our own natural abilities.
When it comes to guns, I like modernized AKs a lot more than m4s/m16s (although I like german guns best, especially the new M27 IAR we're adopting in the US)- still, our optics are the best in the world, and pretty much every US soldier/marine is issued an RCO nowadays, and that's a huge advantage over other military powers in the world who haven't yet adopted the practice..
That is an AK mag, no?
North Korean 5.56 T88 mag (their copy of the AK74)
That bullet right doesn't look like a 5.56
It is- it may be a bit thicker than M16 rounds
I've just never seen a 5.56 in a steel case, they've always been in a brass case. Oh well, those Koreans probably just make cheaper ones.
