All Free Games on Desura

Dec_ Blog

I found this article a few days ago (August 05) and found it to be very useful for my game search on here, so im making note of it here for anyone else who hasnt read/bookmarked it yet:

Indiedb.com
Indiedb.com

I'm going thru that list as well as all 660 currently listed Desura games (vs. mods) to verify for myself which ones really are free, to screen which ones i want to download, and to see which ones have since become non-free. It's likely that the games which were listed as free but arent free anymore, were free as alpha or beta versions prior to official release at which time the devs switched to transaction model. Demos / trialware / crippleware are unacceptable as free versions, and to list those as free is bait-and-switch greedy business deception.

Thanks to the AGTV & Bundeals forums for providing the list of free finds. There certainly is a treasure trove of free available thru Desura... kudos to all who make it happen. And thanks to the devs who make their games available for free.

update - The following games are not in the above list at the time of this writing:

BLogic (tetris clone)
Dimension Jump (Game Maker game)
Insane Zombie Carnage (mistitled in list)
Puzzle Moppet (needs Desura client)
SilverQuest (needs Desura client)
Two Shields
Wave Rave

When I'm done reviewing the entire list, i'll post the entire updated free game list (not including mods) in alphabetical order.

Desura Features - Wish List

Dec_ Blog

it just came to mind that a nice way to make my unconventional use of blog mostly unnecessary and obsolete (which i would like to happen) is to....

Desura Features Wish List - Wish # 1

Allow adding of Free games to the list of games owned, without requiring to download them first. you can download them later at your own convenience, and can continue site navigation and games search without on-the-spot download req for a particular game you know u want to add. maybe this is already in place, but i havent installed the Desura client yet... will do that later... am going to transition to a diff Tb drive soon.

Desura Features Wish List - Wish # 2

Ability to mark games in owned list as Favorites, with option to keep them at top of list.

Desura Features Wish List - Wish # 3

List of game titles customized by user. this would need something like a button to add a game, available on the game page. This would also, imo, mostly replace the game tracking feature for when updates occur.

Desura Features Wish List - Wish # 4

Game pages should have a Last Updated timestamp, w.r.t. major news / version updates / patches / gameplay videos released / DLC's etc.
User game lists should have the option to show the Game Page Last Updated timestamp along with the user's Last Visited timestamp w.r.t. game page visit, and if the game page Last Updated timestamp is more recent than the Last Visited timestamp, have the Last Updated timestamp in bold / highlighted or something. This would definitely make the current game updates tracker obsolete and streamline updates awareness for Desura users.

----------------------------------------------------------

That's all i can think of for now, hopefully these eventually get implemented cuz i think they would definitely enhance the site's usability. it's how i would make a gaming site if i had the expertise and time.

Cheers and happy gaming, fellow gamers

i cant find the bookmarking feature independent of owned games/mods, so im using this instead, for my notes. i noticed a game tracking feature but thats more geared for update notices. it'd be nice to have an Add to (custom) List , button available on every game page, if that doesnt exist yet, like on GamersGate wishlist.

any game i note here (unless otherwise indicated) in blog simply means have further interest/ will look into, later (maybe, if i get around to it)... as for the blog rules, "The article content is unique, original, relevant and presented in a professional manner," my notes here wont be presented professionally and not even intended as a public blog entry. im making use of this as an on-site notes thing since theres no customizable user game list i can find yet (apart from the automatic one for owned games). so if this gets deleted, __

can only have so many Tb of external HD space, right?, so in an attempt to be more organized, before i install any games, this is a sort of screening system.

---------------------------------------------

Games I Happened to Encounter (Among the Thousands Available) Which I Might Like (aka That I Havent Ruled Out Upon Initial Perusal) -- it doesnt mean i like the game, or even that i'll get around to actually trying it, since i have way too many queued up, and other stuff ive been meaning to do, side projects etc

Gateways - Half-Life 2 mod
Aberration - Half-Life 2 mod

^ verify if standalone or base game needed. install size not indicated.
bits of game information like that.... the lack of it says something. yea i can google/find it by other means but i find it just as useful as ranking and certainly more useful than # of watchers, news, reviews, and the Share thing at the end, w/e that is (im noob still).

Epic Inventor
Broken Dimensions
Anna
Paranormal
Amnesia The Dark Descent
Re-Alistair
Process

a tab for similar games of same genre would be nice, with a user-customizable option of how many in list and option to randomize order of appearance or keep in descending order of rank. of course something like that should be a randomized subset and not always the top few most popular games atm.

This is a cool site, glad i found it. If it ever tends more to the big developers of multi-million and billion dollar resources at their disposal, I'll be migrating to other sites. i like it better than steam, definitely.

Desura stands out among the many gaming sites ive seen on the web, along with Good Old Games, Big Fish Games, and Indie Game Bundles, to name a few. bargains, launches, reviews, forums... all elements of a winning game site, besides the quality of the games themselves. best of the gaming world online, apart from the specialized mmo scene, which deserves a whole category in itself...
