Lucas was a huge fan of Flash Gordon, this isn't the only thing in Star Wars that is similar to FG.

Doing my best! Sometimes authenticity is very difficult, and I'll never measure up to the great Ben Burtt. The Snowspeeder guns in particular were very hard to duplicate- I ended up having to just make my own variation of it, otherwise it sounded like poop.
