The plot is tied to the personal tragedy of Victor - the main character of the game - for the resolution of which there is no other way but to the mythical «Wish Machine». Inspired by the film story of the same name by A. and B. Strugatsky.

Edit: I looked it up and from what I can tell is "The Wish Machine" was a standalone book based on the fourth chapter of "Roadside Picnic".
